DanceTherapy as a method of clinical psychology

Relationship between synchronized performance and communication ski11
Kumi NARUSE

We investigated the relationship between the characteristics of synchronized performance and communication skill.Thirty subjects were enrolled, from which 15 pairs were formed. A dual task consisting of forearm rotation movement and push-button reaction to a sound stimulus was utilized, with 4 experimental conditions; Leader,Follower,Pair, and Single. The subjects maintained their preferred speed under the Leader condition and followed the leader’s speed under the Follower condition.Under the Pair condition, speed was accordingly modulated,
while preferred speed was used under the Single condition. Rotation speed, coefficient of rotation speed, and reaction time were analyzed. The ENDCOREs, which consists of 6 components (expressivity, assertiveness, decipherer ability, other acceptance, self control, regulation of interpersonal relationship),was used to measure
communication ski11.
0ur results showed that decipherer ability and assertiveness showed significant correlations with synchronized performance. Subjects who attained a high score were able to adequately modulate speed under each experimental condition. Those results indicate that smooth communication is influenced by different skills, including the encode and decode systems.

A Study of Mixed Rhythm in Tension Flow Rhythm
through Movement Rhythm Experiences for Kinesthetic Empathy
Yukari SAKIYAMA

Tension Flow Rhythm (TFR)in Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP) has two categories related rhythm-Pure Rhythm and Mixed Rhythm.Gaining experience with these senses of Rhythms is vital when learning and
mastering TFR. It is necessary for learners of Pure Rhythm to feel each rhythm by employing various exercises, such as movement and drawing. Learners should practice the notation lines repeatedly until they memorize them.
However,Mixed Rhythm differs in terms of the learning contents of Pure Rhythm. After understanding Pure Rhythm well and memorizing the rhythm lines, Attunement is required by using kinesthetic empathy. In other words learning evolves from experience. The technique of kinesthetic empathy is necessary for Dance/Movement
Therapists to understand clients.
Methodology to experience Mixed Rhythm consists of making pairs or groups, and moving together using different Pure Rhythms. As such, it is necessary to blend each other’s Pure Rhythm. 0ur understanding can
develop based our own preferences of each rhythm.Furthermore,in observing how to blend and create the Mixed Rhythm, we can gain a lot of insight. Pure Rhythm and the Mixed Rhythm may have their own meaning in KMP, but practitioners should pay careful attention to the interpretation of each. Theoretically, the number of combinations of Pure Rhythm is forty five but only eight are to be described in references only.
Experiencing blended rhythms is necessary to understand Mixed RIがhm. Blends can go we11, and they c皿 fail.M/hen blends go we11, we call it Attunement and Clash when they fail. It is important for a11 Dance/Movement Therapists to understand both.Beyond the preference of one’s rhythm, it is this specialized technique of the therapist to be able to attune to clients’ rhythm. Learning of the Mixed Rhythm will give us such learning opportunities.

A Study of Tension Flow Attributes in Kestenberg Movement Profile
and the Application
Yukari SAKIYAMA

Kestenberg Movement Profile (KNIP)used in Dance/Movement Therapy is a useful tool for in-depth and complex movement analysis. Tension Flow Attributes (TFA)is one of nine categories used in analysis in KMP,and is considered the most complicated category with regards of notation. To that end, it is difficult to use KMP in clinical settings with ease for Dance/Movement Therapists.
TFA is the only category that does not notate movements based on direct observation. Movements are analyzed by Tension Flow Rhythm (TFR) lines via the TFA classification standard, and finally calculated to produce a
KNU)diagram, However, when the TFA includes the nucleus of feelings, through six factors of TFA, Dance/Movement Therapists can relate to clients. It is vital to discuss the technique of Attunement to aid this profession.
Once comprehended, the basic meaning and six factors in TFA, we can apply TFA in various interpersonal fields even if one is not an expert in every single KN/IP category, factor and their notations. For example, a
preschool teacher trial by using TFA to smoothen the shift time for naps from lunch shed a light on possibilities for casual applications of TFA. Furthermore, this allows concrete guidance for better Attunement to help
understand flow now and bound flow in TFA.
